Preparing to Leave

Purposes and Goals

At the Joyce H. Williams Center, we are dedicated to the vision of "VIOLENCE FREE" lives for all women and children.  Studies show that about half of all women will be in a battering relationship sometime in their life.  During 1998 in the Kansas City Metropolitan area, approximately 1,500 women and 600 children were provided emergency shelter from their abuser.  These families are of every race and age, and come from all religions, social, and economic levels.

Our goals are:

To expand the services for victims of domestic violence.  Focusing on women and children, our mission is to restore clear thinking and judgment and treat the cause of domestic violence.
To build a coalition among service providers that will promote effective communication and ensure quality comprehensive services.
To conduct informational seminars and workshops designed to educate the public about the nature of domestic violence and its impact on individuals, families, and society.
To support and affirm ideas that empower women and children.

All these efforts combine to decrease the effects of violence and reduce the psychological effects that interfere with a victim's ability to regain power.

Preparing to Leave

YOU are not powerless or locked into a battering relationship forever.  YOU can prepare to leave at the right time.  It often takes time, mentally and emotionally, to end violent relationships.  While YOU are thinking about "Getting Out":

Gather together originals or copies of as many of these important documents and records as you can:

Birth certificates for yourself and your children

Deed or lease to your home

Checkbooks, extra cash and bank statements

Car registration, title, extra keys

Social Security cards

Marriage license

Tax returns - W-2's

Insurance policies and premiums

Paycheck stubs (yours and your spouses)

Picture ID

Joint credit cards

Documentation of household possessions

Many of these documents will be necessary in order for you to obtain housing, public assistance, or free/inexpensive legal services.  However, if you are in immediate danger and find a chance to leave, do so.  Law enforcement can accompany you to your home for personal items later.
