Frequently Asked
Questions
 | Is Friends of Yates a county agency? |
No. We are a private, non-profit
corporation. We receive $60,000 per year in city/county
funding. We also receive state, federal and city
funding. Much of our support comes from the private
sector.
 | Do you provide counseling for
assailants? |
Yes, specifically for youth who are in
flight from an abusive situation.
 | What areas do you serve? |
Our primary service area is northeast
Wyandotte County. We work in cooperation with five
additional domestic violence shelters in the Kansas City metro
area, as well as national shelters.
 | Do you provide shelter for children
unaccompanied by a parent? |
A parent who has been abused must accompany
all children.
 | How long can women stay in the shelter? |
Our limit is 120 days. Unfortunately,
the lack of affordable housing has made this limit almost
impossible. However, our goal is to work with these
families on a continuing basis to find affordable housing and
continued service as needed.
 | Do you serve men? |
We provide shelter for women and their
children. However, we provide everyone with emergency
food and clothing.
 | Does the Friends of Yates need
volunteers? |
YES! There are many different ways to
volunteer in providing services to families in need.
Many professionals volunteer their expertise to our
programs. If interested, go to our Help
Us page to see how you can be of service.
